Choose Your Running Gear

Choosing your running gear is relatively easy, and most of your apparel lasts a long time once you have it. But if you are too take running seriously you will definately need the correct pair of running shoes.

Most of your gear will last you a long time but running shoes will need to be replaced reletively frequently (around 400-500 miles). The amount of running you do will definately dictate how often you replace them.

Running Shoes

The correct running shoes is the most important aspect of your future of running, choose the wrong pair and you will be struggling with blisters. Too avoid blisters do not run too far in your new running shoes untill they are broke in and also ensure that they are the correct fitting before you start wearing them.

I always advise that when you go to purchase new running shoes, you should get your gait measured. This will ensure that you get the correct fitting shoes for the way your foot lands whilst running. This will then help dictate how much stability you should look for in your running shoe. Some runners can get away with having not much stability and therefore a lighter shoe whilst others will need require more support.
Therefore it is my advise that you choose a running store that will help you with this, for example my local running specialist has sales assistants that are of have been serious runners, so they know exactly what they are talking about.

Heart Rate Monitor

The Heart Rate Monitor is a perfect way to ensure that you pace yourself whilst doing your training. Working in certain heart rate zones so that you dont train too hard or train too easily. Once you start training with a Heart Rate Monitor you will know what you are capable of, have more focused training and reach more calculated goals.

The Polar Fs1 is an example of a Heart Rate Monitor that I personally vouch for having used it for over a year now. A perfect product for anybody who wants good value for money, something that has great reliabililty and funcitionality. I know somebody who has used polar for over 10 years now, and everytime the battery goes flat he gets it replaced for less than £10.

Clothing

When dressing for running I would suggest that you choose clothes that you are comfortable in, avoid any underwear that could potentially cause you chafing issues.

Women should make sure that they’re wearing a good, supportive sports bra . The sports bra should fit you properly and not be too stretched out. Most sports bras need to be replaced after 72 washes, when the elasticity is lost, or if your weight changes significantly.

When you go out for your runs, be careful not to overdress. Once you warm up, your extra body heat will make it feel about 15 to 20 degrees warmer. So, for example, if the temperature is above 55 degrees, you’ll probably be fine wearing a T-shirt and shorts.
